One thing I have a huge problem with is formulaic novel writing guides. I hate the idea of playing mad libs with something for a false sense of creative achievement.
And a lot of programs do that. They cost so much money and then their advice is, "Here's a successful novel, when you write your own novel, make sure it looks just like this. The reason it was successful is the main character having a real masculine jaw. All of your main characters should have strong jaws and your book will sell," as well as hundreds of other bizarre prescriptions for writing success. By this point you're having whatever guide your using write "your own" novel!
It absolutely sucks the life out of all forms of writing.
That said, sometimes it's hard to write your own novel without knowing where it's going. Writing my first novel was difficult because I had no idea when or where or how it was going to end or where it would be in ten pages even!
The absolute only plan I recommend is Novel Writing Made Easy. It has two components which are explained on her site far better than I could explain them. What makes the program great is that it doesn't spoon-feed you plot points, it literally teaches you how to creatively write your own novel.
Go check it out if you're struggling to get through your novel. This guide even goes as far as telling you what to after you write your own novel. (As in publishing.) Go now and see if it's right for you.
